‘Workmen’ may exclude airline pilots

New Delhi: The labour ministry is veering round to the idea of making changes in the Industrial Disputes Act to keep highly-paid jobs like that of the airline pilots outside the purview of the law relating to workmen.
The ministry has been resisting the idea for long although the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour had as early as in 2009 suggested that the government lay down a list of “highly paid jobs” which presently come under the ‘workman’ category, as being outside the purview of the laws relating to workmen.
Citing the case of pilots, it had said that those with highly paid jobs are quite capable of negotiating their terms of employment on their own and they hardly take recourse to the Industrial Disputes Act.
