When he named his IT and telecom networking company Supersonic, it reflected the speed at which he had risen from a being a shoe dealer, an unsuccessful one at that.
Gopal Kanda, who later became Haryana’s minister of state for home, was facing bankruptcy in his shoe business by the mid-1990s. The turnaround came when he invested in real estate, amassing enough wealth between 1996 and 2008 to become one of Haryana’s richest businessmen by the second half of the previous decade.
He expanded to IT with Supersonic in Gurgaon, to aviation with the MDLR Airline he launched in 2007, and then to politics in 2009.
