Bird-hit cases nosedive, thanks to old wisdom

The number of bird-hit cases, which account for losses worth millions of dollars to the aviation industry, have declined in the past few years at the slum-surrounded Mumbai airport.
As per the records available with the Mumbai airport, 15 cases of bird hits were reported in 2009. In 2010, the figure came down to 12, which further reduced to 10 in 2011. In the current year, only six bird hits have been reported so far.
An official from the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) said that consistent efforts over the years have helped in controlling the menace. The official added that traditional measures like bursting fire crackers, placing of scare crows near the runways, regular trimming of grass and maintaining cleanliness near the perimeter wall of the airport have helped in reducing the incidents.
