Ministry set to formulate civil aviation policy

Mumbai: The ministry of civil aviation is all set to formulate the civil aviation policy, which will restructure the sector to address its needs better. To achieve this, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) should focus solely on safety issues, said a recent report released by Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA). The ambit of the DGCA should be redefined and unburdened from a host of commercial responsibilities.
Commercial responsibilities can often distract the DGCA from "the core mission" of ensuring safety. The report also said that the technical regulation of the DGCA ought to be independent and transparent. "There must also be a common purpose between the ministry and the DGCA, which has not always been there. It should create an environment which facilitates collaboration with industry," the report said.
