A Bumpy Start for Air India’s Dreamliner

The Dreamliner is giving Air India a hard time. The aircraft had a technical snag on the first day of its operations, delaying the national carrier’s flight by almost an hour.
Just when the flight to Bangalore was about to take off from New Delhi’s airport, a cooling unit, meant to protect the aircraft engines and equipment from overheating, malfunctioned. The issue was sorted out in 30 minutes. After that, the crew decided to refuel the plane, delaying it further.
“There was a technical snag, yes, and repairmen had to be called. The crew also decided to refuel the plane, which took some more time,” said an airline spokesman. He declined to explain the last minute decision to refuel the aircraft. A Boeing Co BA +0.34%. executive couldn’t be reached for a comment.
Such issues, even though minor, are an irritant and could keep fliers away from the airline. Air India Ltd. is banking on the Dreamliner to turn around its fortunes after five years of continuous losses.
