Air India aims to fly high with Dreamliner

After a delay of almost four years and a prolonged spat over compensation between Boeing and the national carrier, Air India has finally received its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. But will the Dreamliner alone be able to lift the Maharaja's fortunes?, reports Sumit Jha and Ronojoy Banerjee of CNBC-TV18.
Apart from being fuel efficient, the Dreamliner will provide Air India with a more suitable alternative to Boeing's 777s for medium haul routes. Air India currently flies 777s to medium haul routes to Tokyo, Shanghai and other destination in West Asia but these planes, which are heavier and guzzle more fuel, are made for long haul routes.
By flying Dreamliners on these routes, AI hopes to make them more cost effective even at lower yields and this is precisely the reason why dreamliners play a prominent role in AI's turnaround plan.
Ajit Singh, civil aviation minister, says that "Dreamliner is an essential component of AI turnaround plan. With more fuel efficiency these aircraft will be a big help for AI."
