SpiceJet hikes pay as cost of living goes up

New Delhi: At a time when Kingfisher has not paid salary for months and Air India is also struggling on that front, low-cost carrier SpiceJet has given its employees hike of between 5% and 10%. SpiceJet CEO Neil Mills said people earning less would get bigger hike. "Cost of living is going up and no hike would have meant that employees are effectively earning less than last year. I can't hold my loader responsible for the aviation industry woes or rise in cost of living."
On the other hand, Kingfisher employees are yet to get April salaries and a section of its pilots and engineers continue to be on strike. Trouble is also brewing on this front in Air India. On Tuesday, erstwhile Indian Airlines' pilots' union wrote to the management asking for early payment of long overdue salary.
"Non-payment of salary amounts to unfair labour practice. There has been no intimation regarding delay in payment of salaries and flying allowances... We hope that the company recognizes the importance of its employees, and does the needful," says the letter sent by union's officiating general secretary Capt Praveen Keerthi to the management.
