Two airport officials held in runway scam

Kochi: The CBI on Tuesday arrested two officials belonging to the Karipur office of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), who are the accused in the Karipur runway widening scam amounting to the tune of Rs 50 lakh. The arrested are Airport Senior Manager Prakash Kachinger and Civil Engineering Department Manager N Sreedhar. The CBI had arrested B R Arora and M P Madhu Nair, directors of Arora and Associates in New Delhi. The company had won the contract for the runway construction. The CBI on Tuesday produced the accused before the court and Judge S Vijayakumar remanded the duo in CBI custody for four days. The CBI found that the officials of the Karipur office of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had hatched a conspiracy with Arora and Associates to cheat the government by preparing and producing forged invoices of IOC, Cochin, showing the supply of bitumen to the company.The company prepared false invoices of the IOC and submitted them to the Airports Authority, along with the bills for strengthening the runway. The airport officials, who were aware of the forgery, made stock entries of bitumen and released orders accordingly for the construction work.
