New Delhi: Even as argueably the most glamourous airline in the country faces a possible lockdown, the rest of the industry perhaps looks better than ever. Bouyed with the recent FDI reforms of allowing 49% stake holding by foreign companies, and large scale infrastructure development in the country including Rs 24,132 crores proposal for development of airports including the remote areas of the country, Ajit Singh feels that the times have never been better for the civil aviation industry. Some of the major highlights of the event addressed by Ajit Singh are as follows:
- Addressing the Economic Editors' Conference, the Civil Aviation Minister pointed to an annual passenger traffic growth at 15% over the past decade, something that never happened before. Passengers are increasingly shifting towards a low-cost business model whereby 70% of the volumes are garnered by cheaper airlines, and the rest by more premium brackets. This stands as a mentionable progress when one looks at 2003-2004 figures, when the low cost carriers had only 1% of the market share.
