Fearing for Vijay Mallya's jet, team checks with Airports Authority of India for landing

New Delhi: One call made the nervousness in Kingfisher promoter Vijay Mallya's personal team clear about the reception awaiting the beleaguered billionaire when he returns to India for the first time after the airline's license was suspended. A top Kingfisher official called a senior Airports Authority of India recently to 'jokingly' check if it is okay for Mallya to do that in coming days.
The main fears stemmed from AAI's threat to impound Mallya's personal Airbus Corporate Jet (VTVJM ) on arrival here and if the air traffic control (that comes under AAI) would allow the ACJ to fly to its destination in India (most probably Bangalore) or ask it to land at some nearest airport on flying into India to impound the same.
"They possibly wanted to check these things to avoid any further embarrassment. We are studying legal options for impounding VTVJM as Kingfisher owes dues of about Rs 300 crore to AAI. Some cheques issued by Mallya bounced, so we are treating it as a personal liability and are examining if his personal plane could be impounded," said highlyplaced sources.
