Indian national held with foreign currencies worth Rs 12.4 million

Kathmandu: Police arrested a person with a huge amount of foreign currencies on board a Fly Dubai plane at Tribhuvan International Airport yesterday.
The arrestee has been identified as Binod Kumar Soni (35), an Indian national operating an electronic shop that sells surveillance cameras in Mahabouddha.
Airport police informed it seized the currencies of nine countries with a face value of Rs 12.4 million from Soni.
A passenger is required to declare all baggage and currencies through customs upon arrival and before departure at the TIA as per the law. “It does indeed rouse suspicion that Soni had cleared 12 security checkpoints at TIA undetected before he was arrested after boarding the aircraft. This incident calls for serious investigation,” a police source said.
Only last month DIG Narayan Bastakoti, airport security in-charge, had told THT, “No one can push contraband even the size of a sewing needle through the airport. It has become foolproof under my leadership.”
