BMC bulldozes shops for bird-free airport zone

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday demolished around 30 shops in Pokhariput, around 500 metres from the wet-side boundary of the airport to ensure bird free zone near Biju Patnaik airport in the city. The shops included slaughter houses and fish selling points.
"In the first phase, we demolished around 30 shops to check bird menace. It was a small stretch, which had meat and fish shops on the roadside behind the proposed city bus station site. We will carry out demolition of more shops on the eastern side soon," said Sumita Behera, assistant commissioner (recovery) at BMC. She said some more areas attracting birds have also been identified by the airport authorities.
The demolition drive was taken up after identifying the place during a joint visit by BMC and airport officials. "Initially, there was some resistance but it was deftly contained by police personnel of Airfield police station. The shops were unauthorised as they were encroaching upon the roads," said Behera. She said in the next phase the civic body will demolish some meat shops in Ganga Nagar.
