Udaipur airport set to handle international flights soon

Jaipur: Soon Udaipur airport will be capable of handling international flights. Finally, the cement manufacturer has agreed to reduce the chimney of a stone crusher situated outside the airport by four metres making it suitable for boeings to land.
The chimney is located just outside the airport and stood like a stumbling block disabling even domestic flights to use the entire runway stretch of 9000 feet. Domestic flights could use 7,500 feet of the runway to avoid a collision with the chimney.
"Once the obstacle is be removed/reduced, the airport will be fully operational for international flights," said Amit Verma, Udaipur airport director, adding that the airport frequently handles charter planes from abroad. Every day the airport receives eight to 10 charter planes.
Though, a runway of 7,500 feet is enough for most flights, including international ones but many global airlines have made it a norm that they didn't operate at destinations where the runway was less than 9,000 feet.
