AAI to commission study to prevent bird hits at Chennai airport

Mumbai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will appoint a nature conservation NGO to study the bird-hit pattern at the Chennai airport, as per The Hindu Business Line report. This comes at a time when the airport is plagued with emergency landings by flights when birds collide with the aircrafts. This year, there have been five instances of birds bumping into aircrafts as of October.
The study, which will be commissioned within three months, will suggest mitigation plan to the airport authorities, said H S Suresh, Chennai Airport Director. The AAI will soon float a tender for deciding the NGO which will conduct the study “Experts say that bird-hit pattern changes once in five or six years; but it has been nearly ten years since a study was conducted at the airport. So, we decided to redo the study now. It may last for a year and will look into migration and nesting pattern of birds,” he said. Such studies have been conducted earlier in other cities in India as well, he added.
