Centre suspects foul play in Begumpet airport fire

Hyderabad: Civil aviation ministry officials overseeing investigations into the mysterious fire at the old airport in Hyderabad suspect foul play and said there was virtually no security in place to even prevent anyone from sneaking inside to trigger a possible fire. They also said repeated requests for providing Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel to guard the high-security area was ignored for the past two years.
"It is strange that within 5-10 minutes all the five aircraft were gutted and it is not possible if it was just a case of simple short circuit," a top security official from New Delhi said.
The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered an independent inquiry into the fire accident and they will take into account aspects such as poor security and breach of security by unknown people, officials said.
"Anything could have happened and anyone could have walked in there. You cannot leave such a high security area from where there is regular chartered flight movement unguarded," another high level source said.
