Lower airport levy for longer period on anvil

New Delhi: After failing to get the private shareholders of Delhi and Mumbai airports to infuse additional equity and scrap the steep airport development fee (ADF), the aviation ministry has begun looking at alternatives to provide relief to travellers. It is now trying to adopt a twin strategy that suits both the passengers and the PPP airports: Reduce the amount of ADF and increase duration of collection period.
The Praful Patel-headed aviation ministry had on February 9, 2009, allowed Delhi to charge Rs 200 and Rs 1,300 from each outgoing domestic and international flyer, respectively, for 36 months from March 1, 2009. Then on February 27, 2009, the ministry allowed Mumbai airport to charge Rs 100 and Rs 600 from each outgoing domestic and international flyer, respectively, for a period of 48 months from April 1, 2009.
