MDP files no-confidence motion against Defence Minister Nazim

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has submitted a no-confidence motion against Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim to Parliament on Thursday.
According to MDP, the no-confidence motion against Nazim had been filed as he has abused his authority as the Acting Transport Minister by using military influence to terminate civil contracts involving the government outside of the legal process.
MDP is indirectly referring to the premature termination of the government contract with GMR Infrastructure Limited to operate and develop the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) for 25 years. Nazim as the Acting Transport Minister had been a member of the ministerial committee constituted to evaluate the controversial agreement with GMR. Though the government had cited various legal and economic issues with the GMR contract signed during the former government before terminating the agreement, there has so far been no signs of military involvement in the dispute. Meanwhile, GMR's CEO Andrew Harrison had relayed assurances given by Nazim that the government would not adopt any coercive measures when taking back the airport at midnight on Friday.
