Kathmandu: A regional international airport is not possible with only one air entry point, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
“We are already suffering from air congestion due to
a single air entry point, therefore, unless there are multiple entry points, the concept of developing a regional international airport will not be possible,” said director general of CAAN Tri Ratna Manandhar.
It has been a year since Nepal requested India for
additional air entry points to reduce the growing air congestion. Nepal, currently, has only one air entry point that is from Simara but has six exit points.
The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) has already requested India for three additional air entry points. “We have asked for two entry points in the west — Bhairahawa, Mahendranagar or Nepalgunj — whereas in the east, we have requested for one air entry point — either Janakpur or Biratnagar,” said Manandhar.
