The land identified for Pune’s new international airport at Chakan, which has been hanging in the balance due to its proximity to the Lohegaon Air Force base, may now have a silver lining on its horizon. On Friday, the State’s Chief Secretary Jayant Banthia, Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) Managing Director UPS Madan and Director-aviation Captain Sanjay Karve are set to meet the Union Civil Aviation Secretary K N Shrivastav and Airports Authority of India Chairman V P Agarwal to hammer out possibilties to push ahead the project for the new airport.
“We have identified land at Chakan and this will be discussed at the meeting on Friday,” Captain Karve told Mirror. The government is yet to speak to the Indian Air Force about its plans, and their view remains unknown.
The government, keen on a new civilian airport for the city, had already identified land at Chakan close to the industrial belt for this purpose, naer the Air Force base there. The MADC website reveals details about developing the airport at Rajgurunagar. MADC’s Madan said 3,300 hectares of land would have to be acquired from various villages at a cost of around Rs 1,200 crore.
