Union poll takes a toll on airport services

Kolkata: Stinking toilets, overflowing waste bins, a dirty lounge - welcome to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport.
Though these are not uncommon sights at Kolkata airport, which has always been notorious for trade unionism and where normal operations are mostly disrupted during bandhs called by the unions, this time however it is not a strike that has pushed passenger amenities to the back seat. The Group D staff is 'busy' preparing for the election to the airport employees' union scheduled on January 29.
"The toilet is dirty. There are no tissue papers or soap to wash hands. I have been sitting in the lounge for more than two hours waiting for my transit flight to Mumbai. No sweeper has cleaned or mopped the floor as yet. Litter is strewn all around. It is pathetic. Kolkata airport is worst when it comes to passenger amenities and cleanliness," said businessman Raj Gurmeet Singh who flew into the city from Jorhat on Monday afternoon.
