Jayalalithaa skips airport terminal opening

Chennai: Chief minister J Jayalalithaa stayed away from the inauguration of the two new terminals at Chennai airport on Thursday, stating that the ministry of civil aviation did not respond to her demand to name the new domestic terminal after former chief minister and AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran.
Jayalalithaa received vice-president M Hamid Ansari at the airport as per protocol when he landed in the city to inaugurate the new terminals. But she returned without taking part in the function. In a statement released to the media during the function, Jayalalithaa said she had sent a letter to civil aviation minister Ajit Singh requesting him to name the new building after MGR before it was inaugurated. But, "there was no order in this regard from the union government. This has pained me and the people of Tamil Nadu," she said.
