Kozhikode: In one of the biggest seizures of gold in recent years at the Karipur International airport, the Customs Air Intelligence Unit foiled a bid to smuggle 3 kg of gold by a passenger who arrived from Dubai.
Acting on a tip off, customs officers seized gold bars concealed in a DVD player and audio system. Customs have nabbed the passenger, Kadavathur Subair (32), hailing from Kannur district who had landed at the airport in an Air India Express flight IX 344 from Dubai at 5.30 am.
A customs officer said that there has been a spurt in attempts by passengers to smuggle in gold through the airport following the considerable price difference between Indian and international prices due to the increase in import duty on gold earlier this year.
