Kolkata: The bubble of enthusiasm over Kolkata getting its new terminal is bursting. For the fourth time in less than a week, a glass panel has crumbled without impact, raising serious concerns over the safety of the mammoth steel and glass structure.
Two glass panels, both in the departure level, crumbled and fell apart on Thursday evening, triggering fear among passengers as well as airport and airline staff. Earlier, two glass panels had shattered on Sunday and Monday, in the same area. Sources at the airport said 100 glass panels had shattered even before the terminal was commissioned.
"This is real scary. When the glass panel shattered on Sunday, we thought it was due to the gale that evening. But with glasses continuing to crumble for no apparent reason on Monday and Thursday, there is anxiety. What if the entire building crumbles?" asked an airline executive.
