ATC tower may shut down Juhu secondary runway

Mumbai: A new terminal building and an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower may come up at Juhu airport, rendering its secondary runway useless. Plans are afoot for the two facilities despite the AAI chairman's assurance last month that the runway will be retained for operations.
On Monday, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) planning directorate in Delhi forwarded a request to the Juhu airport to send the plan for the terminal and tower for necessary height sanctions from the NOC department.Officials said the AAI planning directorate in Delhi had not yet been briefed about the decision to retain the runway.
According to sources, the planning directorate sought sanction for a terminal building only 60 metres from the secondary runway. A tower is planned on the same premises to control flight movements.
