Corrected flight glide path to ensure smoother landings, fewer delays

Mumbai: Mumbai airport will have a corrected glide path from Thursday, which will enable aircraft to land smoothly and more accurately on the airport's main runway. The slope gradient will now be compatible with global safety standards. Also, one side of the main runway, shut for operations since November 2012 to install the glide angle, will now reopen, meaning fewer flight delays.
Work on correcting the glide path angle started in November. The glide path is an aid that gives vertical guidance to a landing aircraft. Its function is to bring the aircraft to a proper spot or touchdown zone on the runway. The aircraft locks the signal and descent angle from the glide path. A descent angle of three degrees is considered optimum.
