Couple remanded for trying to smuggle ketamine


Trichy: A man and a woman, who were arrested by the customs officers (preventive) at the Trichy airport on charges of smuggling Rs two crore worth of ketamine were on Tuesday remanded to 15 days' custody by the judicial magistrate-I. On Monday, the two persons, identified as Nasser Nazir, 31 and SreejaDevi, 29, from Chennai allegedly tried to smuggle 8.7kg ketamine and 1.3kg of ephedrine out of the country in an AirAsia flight bound for Kuala Lumpur.
It is said that there is a huge demand for the odourles ketamine and ephedrine in South East Asia where the substance is misused as a party drug by revellers. Moreover, informed sources said that ketamine is also used as a general antidote to pain and discomfiture during medical tests and as anaesthetic during minor surgeries.
