The keynote address at this week’s Airline Retail Conference in Hong Kong was delivered by King Power duty-free and travel-retail managing director and Asia Pacific Travel retail Association president Sunil Tuli. Addressing the changing face of Asian air travel he discussed the way Asia passenger growth has surpassed Europe since 2011. Half the world’s population is in Asia and is now wealthy enough to travel and will dominate the world travel market in future, and he cited five developments that will support that movement: the development of infrastructure, growing income, population growth, growth of low cost carriers and technology.
On the issue of technology he said: “We can influence our own sales with our own efforts for example by near-field communication and mobile phone payments,” he said.
The following session was entitled How to retrofit 12,000 crew with training. Travel Retail Training managing director Christine Martin made a presentation on crew engagement, before introducing sales manager Finnair Travel Retail inflight pre-order and mail order services Eeva- Liisa Osterbërg who explained the function of sales motivators who train young staff on the listed products.
