Kanpur airport under expansion, to connect with major cities

Kanpur: Kanpur (Ahirwan) Airport will soon be extended as the land for it has been identified and soon the acquisition proceedings will be underway. According to Sub Divisional Magistrate, Kanpur, IP Uttam, the airport authority has identified a land of around 100 acres in Sheikhpur and Mavaiya villages. Both villages are adjacent to the airport and a report regarding this has been sent to civil aviation ministry. After the expansion, citizens of Kanpur will avail direct flights to Gujrat, Tamilnadu and Maharashtra.
Kanpur airport, also known as Chakeri airport, was originally designated to Indian Air Force, and regular flights to Delhi, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Kolkata, Banglore, Chennai and Mumbai were operating during the 1970s. But due to some reasons flights were reduced and now they operate between Kolkata and Allahabad airport only. Earlier, passengers bound overseas or other parts of the country used to travel around 80 kilometers to Amausi Airport, Lucknow.
