Air route to the Roerich estate in the Indian Himalayas reopens

India’s national air carrier Air India today opened flights to the Indian town of Kullu in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh. Not far away is the village of Naggar, where the former estate of the Roerich family, the site where Russian painter Nicholas Roerich was cremated, is located.
Up until the beginning of 2012, India’s second-largest privately-owned air carrier Kingfisher Airlines had offered regular flights to Kullu. But financial difficulties forced the flight to be discontinued, which is why over the last 12 months, tourists visiting Naggar and neighbouring towns in the Western Himalayas could only reach it by land. The trip from New Delhi takes more than 12 hours, and other major Indian cities are much farther from Kullu.
