Boeing Starts Installing Batteries on Air India Dreamliners

New Delhi: Boeing Co. ( BA ) said Friday that it has started installing new battery systems on Air India Ltd.'s half a dozen 787 Dreamliner jets even as the state-run carrier began talks with the U.S. plane maker to seek financial compensation because it had to ground the entire fleet for months.
"Our immediate priority is to get the aircraft back in service," Pratyush Kumar, president of Boeing India, told The Wall Street Journal.
"As we speak, our teams are in Mumbai installing approved modifications so that Air India can put the aircraft back into service at the earliest possible."
Air India--one of Boeing's initial customers for the Dreamliner--grounded all six of its 787s in the middle of January after being asked to do so by India's director general of civil aviation. The six twin-aisle planes are parked currently in Mumbai.
