Medha Patkar meet villagers affected by Chennai airport expansion project

Chennai: Social activist MedhaPatkar on Wednesday addressed a gathering of more than 100 residents who are affected by the Chennai airport expansion project.
Medha, prior to her meeting with the state chief secretary SheelaBalakrishnan was making a personal visit to assess the impact of delay in land de notification at five villages- Manapakkam, Kolapakkam, Gerugamapakkam, Tharapakkam and Kovur.
In 2007, government of Tamil Nadu notified 1069.99 acres of land for acquisition in the villages to build a parallel runway at Chennai airport. Airports Authority of India (AAI) had issued a letter in November 2011 to the state government informing that parallel runway plan is dropped and the earmarked land can be de-notified. But the denotification process is still pending before the state government.
