Trichy: The officials of the air-intelligence wing seized 590 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs 15 lakh from a passenger and another man in the airport in the late hours of Saturday in Trichy.
Acting on a tip-off, the air intelligence wing officers were checking the passengers who arrived in Trichy international airport from Singapore by Tiger Airways flight at 11.30 pm on Saturday. During the check, the officials found 380g of undeclared gold ornaments kept in the pants pockets of a male passenger identified as Manohar, 40 a resident of Idumbavanam near Thiruthuraipoondi in Thiruvarur district.
During the investigation, Manohar told the officials that someone in Singapore asked him to handover the gold to a one Veerappan at Trichy airport. He denied any connection with the man and he expressed ignorance about the legal procedure to bring gold from foreign countries. Based on his statement, the officials laid a trap to nab the beneficiary, one Veerappan.
