In-flight catering too costly, says Kudumbashree

Thiruvananthapuram: The MoS civil aviation's offer to Kudumbashree, to take up in-flight catering for Air India Express, is a flattering but costly proposition, the NGO said.
Kudumbashree executive director K B Valsala Kumari estimates that the organization would need machinery worth Rs 10 crore to carry out the operation.
Venugopal said he had approached Kudumbashree earlier this year, but they seemed under-confident about living up to the in-flight safety standards. He dismissed the idea that it may be a costly gamble for Kudumbashree, as the in-flight catering service can be secured only through a two-stage bidding process, which is done from the Air India headquarters. Add to that, Kudumbashree only specializes in traditional fare, while in-flight menu also demands continental cuisine.
"I had checked with the civil aviation ministry details of the bidding process. Being a government PSU, Kudumbashree is eligible for certain concessions in rules," said Venugopal.
