Project to develop Karipur Airport in a deadlock

Kozhikode:  Lending credence to charges of lack of government interest in acquiring land for the development of Karipur Airport, the state government has apparently not issued orders to appoint a land acquisition officer for the crucial project despite repeated requests from the Malappuram district administration.
With the government sitting on the request for the past six months, the district administration is unable to carry out further acquisition proceedings including issuing the mandatory Section 6 (1) notification. This notification has to be carried out by the designated officer. The much delayed land acquisition for airport development had hit a roadblock following resistance on the part of local residents from around the airport.Various trade and business organizations, including the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry, have alleged that the government has been deliberately delaying the project to satisfy local political interests of the IUML.
