Chennai: Air customs officials at the Chennai airport on Tuesday seized gold jewellery worth Rs 22 lakh from a female passenger who arrived from Dubai.
Sources said the 45-year-old woman from Keelakarai in Ramanathapuram district was wearing gold bangles and chain weighing around 750 gram under her burqa and did not inform customs authorities about the jewellery to the while passing through immigration formalities.
"She was wearing gold bangles up to her elbow and also had several chains. Her husband works in Dubai. The gold has been seized because she is not eligible to bring this much quantity of gold. A passenger should have stayed abroad for more than 180 days to bring more than half-a-kilo of the precious metal," said a customs official.
