After chopper, fund-starved Punjab govt to buy Rs 70 cr aircraft

Chandigarh: After purchasing a Bell 429 helicopter worth Rs 38 crore, cash-strapped Punjab government is planning to buy a fixed-wing aircraft worth around Rs 70 crore.
As per sources, the state government had decided to purchase an aircraft as well as a chopper a year ago. However, only a chopper was purchased and it was decided to buy the aircraft later.
The helicopter had been purchased for use of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Badal.
Following a recent meeting, the cabinet sub-committee on civil aviation has approved purchase of an eight-seat fixed wing aircraft. The matter has been referred to Chief Secretary’s committee.
Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhinsa said the government was only replacing C-19 King Air which had crashed with a new aircraft and negotiations would take place at Chief Secretary level for acquisition and identification of an ideal aircraft.
