New Delhi: Air India (AI) and Jet Airways are headed for trouble in Europe as they have not filed data on emission norms with the European Union (EU). The government continues to oppose EU's Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) for airlines despite the European Commission (EC) threatening to fine AI and Jet.
Industry sources confirmed that the two airlines could soon get a notice to pay over Rs.22 lakh as a fine for violating the emission norms. The EC has said that could fine Indian and Chinese airlines for not sharing emission data. The civil aviation ministry seems to be clueless on the issue especially at a point when domestic carriers are expanding their footprint in Europe. A senior official said that the issue has been discussed with the EC many times. AI and Jet officials said that they would go according to the government's advice on the issue. The government has asked airlines not to share any data with the EU.
