Aranmula airport: PM's intervention sought

Thiruvananthapuram: With the campaign ‘Annavum Vellavum mudikkaruth’ (Do not destroy food and water) gaining popularity among the people, a group of cultural, political and religious leaders has submitted a petition to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking for his immediate intervention to stop the State Government from proceeding with the setting up of Aranmula airport.
The petition questions the need for a new airport at an aerial distance of 95 km from the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery and 93 km from the Trivandrum International Airport.
The project, it pointed out, also violated a number of state and central laws related to land and environmental protection including the Environment Protection Act, Kerala Land Reforms Act, Kerala Land Conservancy Act, Kerala Land Utilisation Order, Kerala Conservation of Paddy and Wetland Act and the Kerala Irrigation and Water Conservation Act.
