CIAL goes green with solar plant

Kochi: Minister for Fisheries, Ports, Airports and Excise K Babu on Saturday inaugurated a 100 KW Solar Power Plant at the airport as part of CIAL’s initiative to promote utilisation of non-conventional and renewable energy.
The minister said that the airport has one of the largest electricity bills in the state, paying almost Rs12 crore each year. By commissioning of the solar power system, he said, a portion of it can be saved. CIAL has set a model for all who are consuming large quantities of power, he said, The state is incurring a huge amount by way of purchasing electricity from outside, and the large consumers in the state have a moral responsibility of finding non-conventional energy such as solar power as initiated by CIAL, the minister pointed out. The total project cost has been estimated at nearly `98 lakh, but with the subsidy of 30 percent by MNRE, the cost incurred by CIAL has been pegged at `65 lakh.
The minister also said that CIAL Infrastructures Ltd, a subsidiary of the CIAL, has presented its project report before the board chairman, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, for diversifying into construction of dams, roads and bridges.
