Govt fraudently changed Mopa land ownership, say farmers

Mapusa: The government has been accused of "fraudulently" changing the ownership of land in Mopa to facilitate land acquisition. This charge was made by the members of the Mopa Vimantall Piditt Xetkari Samiti, a body of farmers protesting the acquisition of land for the proposed international airport.
"The government is hurrying with the acquisition process, even though the matter is sub-judice," Mopa Vimantall Piditt Xetkari Samiti convener Sandip Kambli said.
"It was easy for the government to acquire the land because it showed the land as belonging to "fake owners". Why would one who does not own the land oppose the acquisition process? Perhaps they will be happy to get free compensation, making the job easier for the government," Kambli said, asking "how the tenant and the owner can be the same for the same land".
