Govt set to launch Kannur airport project runway work

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government is set to launch the work of the runway and allied constructions of the proposed Kannur airport. The airports wing under the department of port is gearing up to invite financial and technical bids from the seven shortlisted firms to choose the final implementing agency.The state had shortlisted them from among 20 companies that responded to the expression of interest (EoI) invite.
The shortlisted companies comprise GMR, L&T, Essar-TAV, ITD Cementation, Sanjose, Gayatri and Eco-Unity, which include Turkish, Spanish and Russian firms having joint ventures with Indian companies. The pre-bid meeting was held here on May 23.The runway and allied construction phase of the project is estimated to cost Rs 700 crore. The government's main criterion while floating the EoI was that the bidder should have undertaken works worth at least 75% of the estimated project cost of Rs 525 crore.The earthwork and airfield activities include construction of runway and allied tarmacs, runway lighting, taxiway lighting, setting up electrical substation, fire station, workshop, and communications buildings on the air-side.
