IAF deploys heavy-lift chopper for rescue operations

New Delhi: Further cranking up operations in flood-hit areas of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh with 13 more aircraft on Friday, the IAF even deployed its old warhorse, the gigantic heavy-lift Mi-26 helicopter — the world's largest and most powerful helicopter capable of lifting up to 20 tonnes.
The IAF also plans to land a C-130J 'Super Hercules' aircraft, which has been undertaking reconnaissance missions over the affected areas from the Hindon airbase, with supplies at the Dharasu landing ground in Uttarakhand on Saturday. Customized for "covert special operations", the C-130Js are capable of landing at makeshift, short runways.
The Mi-26 ferried 30 fuel barrels and 70 paratroopers to another landing ground called Guachar on Friday morning. IAF now has 36 helicopters (23 Mi-17s, 11 Dhruv ALH, 1 Mi-26 and 1 Cheetah), two C-130Js, three AN-32, one Avro and one IL-76 aircraft deployed in the operations.
