London: Air India’s new 256-seater Dreamliner touched down at London’s Heathrow airport to a water cannon salute as the ageing state-run airline sought to revive itself with a flight to the British capital, which was redolent of a similar exercise sixty-five summers ago that laid the seeds of a once-popular brand.
On June 8, 1948, Air India, then run by J.R.D. Tata, had started India’s first air service to London from Bombay (now Mumbai) with the Malabar Princess, a 40-seater Lockheed Constellation.
The ad for the debut flight 65 years ago had the maharaja bowing with the blurb “Fly with me to London via Cairo and Geneva every Tuesday in a beautiful Constellation”.
That London flight made Air India a well-known brand in Europe, and the management is hoping for a repeat with the Dreamliner touchdown on Sunday.
