MIHAN India Limited consults NEERI for insect problem during monsoons

Nagpur: The operator of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport here, MIHAN India Limited (MIL), has consulted NEERI in order to combat the problem of insects during monsoons. Once the rain starts, a lot of insects come out of the ground near the runway. These insects in turn attract a lot of birds, which are dangerous for the aircrafts.
Accidents happening due to bird activity are not unheard of and birds can cause much havoc. Last week, one aircraft had to be diverted to Hyderabad after it ran out of fuel waiting for space around the runway to be cleared of birds and another had to be grounded after one of its engine blades was damaged in a bird hit.P Anil Kumar, senior airport director, told TOI that MIL had consulted NEERI to tackle the problem. He added that spraying pesticide or such action won't help as it was more likely to pollute the water bodies and sources around the area.
