Relief operations gain momentum, 300 stranded tourists rescued

Shimla: A day after failing to utilize two India Air Force choppers in rescue operations to airlift stranded tourists in Kinnaur district, air rescue finally gained some momentum on Thursday, with three choppers rescuing around 300 stranded tourists from different parts of rain and snow ravaged tribal district. However, a large number of tourists are still stuck in Kinnaur district, waiting to be airlifted, sources said.
While only the state-run chopper was airlifting tourists on Wednesday, two choppers of Indian Air Force, having got fuel, finally participated in the rescue operations on Thursday, after which tourists from different locations were airlifted to the base camp at Rampur town. About 210 persons were evacuated on Tuesday while 69 persons were airlifted on Wednesday. Government officials have been directed to evacuate the remaining 400-odd people within the next two days, they said.
