United we fly

Mumbai: The Uttarakhand floods have precipitated the largest ever air rescue operation in India's history; at least 100 helicopters and light aircraft are being used to rescue victims and fly them to nearby cities. A total 83 choppers from various agencies have been deployed in the area - 45 of these are from the Air Force, 13 from the Army and 25 are from state governments, private companies and individual owners.

Apart from 45 choppers, the Air Force has also provided seven light aircraft from at least 10 different locations for the rescue. Its contingent comprises:
C-130J Super Hercules helicopter
Mi 26 helicopter
MI-17s helicopter
ALH helicopter
Antonov-32 aircraft
IL 76 aircraft
C-130Js aircraft
AN 32 aircraft
" Air Commodore Rajesh Issar, who is coordinating the rescue operation on behalf of the Indian Air Force, said, "With a dedicated team of over 600 and 45 choppers, we have rescued over 9,000 people so far. The other seven aircraft are being used to fly people to Delhi. We have also air-dropped over 2,000 tonnes of food in affected areas." Issar added that this is India's largest ever chopper-based rescue operation, for which the Air Force has called on all its stations, including the seven air commands, to contribute.
