Uttarakhand pilgrims recall brush with danger, slam airlines

Mumbai: The first batch of 40 pilgrims who had been stranded in Uttarakhand arrived safely in Mumbai on Thursday night. While the pilgrims were upset that they had to pay double the airfare for the journey from New Delhi to Mumbai, they said they were grateful to be alive.
Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said the government had contacted 2,008 of the 2,470 tourists from the state who were stranded in the flood-affected region. Another 400 tourists held up in Gaurikund were also reportedly safe. The state has dispatched another team of five doctors and four officers to aid rescue efforts. It has given Rs 50 lakh to the existing camp in Dehradun to repatriate pilgrims back to Maharashtra.
Mayor Sunil Prabhu announced that the civic body will also send doctors and rescue personnel to aid relief operations in Uttarakhand. Another team will deliver medicines, essential items and clothes to pilgrims in distress.
