14 flyers detained for smuggling in gold worth Rs 5cr

Chennai: Customs officials seized 2.5kg of gold worth more than 5 crore from 14 passengers who arrived at Chennai airport by different flights in the last two days.
The custom authorities received a tip off that a large amount of gold might be smuggled from Malaysia, Singapore or Sri Lanka and the authorities had increased surveillance of passengers arriving from these countries since Friday.
The accused, who arrived by different flights, were detained on the suspicion that they may be carriers. The travellers hailed from Thanjavur, Trichy and Madurai and had gone to Malaysia, Singapore and Colombo on tourist visas. Checks revealed that they had concealed small quantities of gold in their bags.
