Airport chief breaches security

At a time when the country is on a security high alert after the recent blasts in Bodhgaya, the controller of the Rajkot airport R Gupta on Tuesday allegedly breached security and flew in an aircraft without requisite permissions or security checks. The Mumbai region office of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated an investigation into the case. The Airport Authority of India is also conducting a parallel investigation.
According to the airport sources, the incident took place at the Rajkot airport that operates only for a limited time in mornings and evenings. On Tuesday afternoon, Gupta called up the Air Traffic Control and asked them to start operations to allow an Airport Authority of India (AAI) aircraft to undertake calibration with the flying communication system at the airport.
ATC officials objected to the request because no CISF security personal were on duty to secure the airport as per stipulated guidelines. The take-off was cleared after Gupta argued that security was not a concern as the aircraft did not have passengers.
