Pune: While Chakan airport has remained a non-starter, a private airstrip project at Saswad is also not seeing light of the day. A 'General Aviation and Heliport' project proposed at Bhonsale Wadi near Saswad near Hadapsar by city-based General Aviation Airfield and Infrastructure Pvt Ltd (GAAI) was red flagged by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in 2009 citing the Chakan Airport plan.
The project would create infrastructure for landings, take-offs, maintenance and parking of helicopters as well as fixed-wing private, non-scheduled aircraft near the city. With the NOC for the heliport expiring this December, the company has applied for a fresh, provisional NOC. The company has made a fresh plea to the Air HQ to provide a provisional NOC for the project.
The company said that an "airfield" and not an "airport" makes a viable option for the city given that an airfield need not comply with ICAO standards that an airport has to abide by, thus making it an easier, yet beneficial option to cater to the city's aviation needs.
